sweet stereotype of love. *giveaway*

Giveaway now closed. Congrats to Jenny for winning the calories chocolate with your sweet love story!

See's Candies

Have you ever gotten one of these for Valentine’s?

I haven’t.

I’ve never gotten a fruitcake on Christmas either.

There’s a reason the stereotype is there, and I can promise you as soon as you saw the picture of See’s Candy up there you started picking out which one you would eat first. (I’d take that big square one, upper right heart bump.) You really want to torture yourself? Check out all of the See’s Candies Valentine’s gifts.

Let me tell you about Valentine’s Day while you’re the wife of a Law Student.

Two years ago? He forgot.

Last year? We ended up on a Valentine’s Date which actually meant we ended up in the car in the parking lot of an Italian restaurant with me screaming at the top of my lungs and doing the really snotty ugly cry in front of everyone coming and going from the restaurant.

I’m not even sure what we were fighting about. But it was ugly. And I cried. A lot.

(Cody just reminded me, it’s because he wanted me to make a phone call for him. MARRIAGE FTW!)

By the time I was out of tears and energy to cry anymore I flopped down in Cody’s lap across the center console and he slipped a tiny little canvas bag into my hand.

In the bag was the most perfect necklace from Round House Jewelry on Etsy.

Everybody now, aww. Not only did he have perfect timing, but he KNEW WHAT ETSY WAS AND HOW TO USE IT.

So sure, that’s not exactly what one would picture as the most romantic Valentine’s ever, but that’s how we roll here in the house of moosh.

This year we’re going all out stereotype. We’re going to be having one of those candy boxes up there, we’re having a cheeseburger dinner and seeing a movie called Valentine’s Day while tiny gramma babysits our little lump of love.

How about you? Do you want to win a two pound box of chocolates just in time for Valentine’s Day enjoyment? Leave a comment below with your Sweetest Love Story. (or you know, Sweetest moosh-style Love Story.)

It was our first anniversary and i was like 2 weeks away from being due. I was huge. we couldn’t find a good chocolate fondue place (we had it at our wedding and really wanted to have it at our anni) so my sweet hubby bought everything for a chocolate fondue, but i starting having pains (not labor just soreness from a past hip injury that goes crazy when i am prego) anyways so they only way to let me is to have a hot bath, so he set up a bubble bath and chocolate fondue, we just got a brand new laptop so we put a movie on. It was perfect, chocolate fondue, bubble bath and an amazing movie. well then someone (him) put an empty glass (which were my ice chips) on the back of the toilet, which he then found out wasn’t flat, so the glass went shattering into the tub, into our chocolate fondue and all over our brand new laptop. he felt so bad. we decided to go to bed clean it up in the morning and start over!

I had recently graduated from college and moved really far away from the guy that I really wanted to marry. After his last visit to me, I realized that the long distance thing wasn’t going to work for me (we had been dating for a year and a half at this point), I told him that I could no longer wait for him to propose to me. It killed me to break it off but reality sunk in. My brother who I was rooming with at the time, called me to me meet at the local restaurant for dinner after work. I got to the restaurant a little late and so I was looking for my brother and out of the corner of my eye, who did I spy? My sweetheart, standing with two days of scruff on his face and a big bouquet of roses. My face registered every emotion in 10 secs, anger, surprise, confusion, happiness, amazement. He had driven 22 hours straight(because he couldn’t afford the flight) and proposed right then and there and we have been happily married ever since.

It’s a toss up between an anniversary and engagement story. Let’s go with anniversary.

I worked at a large outdoor mall in college. On our anniversary my (then boyfriend) got a friend to drive him to the mall, look around in all 45 million parking lots to find my car. He had gotten my spare key from my mom back home and had a plan. They swapped out my car for the friend’s car so that my car would be in the same spot. Then drove to Best Buy and had a brand new stereo installed. Also took a picture with a sign while in the store and printed it out. When I returned to my car after work I found the photo taped to the dash- Saw the gift and oh. my. gosh. hello tears. I couldn’t believe he did that!

Almost 5 years ago, I woke up, my water broke and our third baby was born. She is, and always will be, the best Valentine I’ve ever had.

Romance Shmomance: We eat birthday cake.

It never fails. Two weeks before V-Day, my husband always asks “so, what do you want for Valentine’s Day?” and that, for me, takes all the fun out of it. I end up cooking (at home) because I hate going to packed restaurants on nights when everyone else is out. I’m kind of jaded when it comes to V-day. I’d rather “celebrate our love” in other ways every day of the year. :)

It was a New Years Eve dance many, many years ago. (Okay, nine.)

We went out. Which was a miracle in itself, because it was blowing up a storm and a nasty, cold night. About eleven o’clock it started tending toward a blizzard, and most of the people left.

Bear went over to the DJ, found out they didn’t have the song we danced to at our wedding, and went OUT IN THE SNOW across the road and down-a-ways to get his copy of the CD so we could dance to our song. All without telling me.

(happy sigh)

Our son was born in early October.

My boyfriend is so sweet that everyday is like valentines day. No, really. :)

My favorite actual V-day was when he took my spare car keys from my apartment and put a card on my dashboard while I was at work.

My most romantic story ever? The first time I told my husband “I love you” he said “Thank you.” Yep, it was that awesome. I think I deserve chocolate :-)

Cody’s father proposed to me on Valentines Day in 1975. With a dozen roses and a diamond bigger than I would have ever thought I would receive. He even asked my father if he could marry me. In the past my father had told numerous boys to not bother coming back. They were not dating his daughter. I was quite happy that Boyce got to stay.

My sweetest love story is on my blog, in THREE PARTS, no less!! It’s the story of how I met my husband and forced him to love me:

My husband has done several sweet things since we were married (almost 7 yrs ago). One of those things, was last Valentine’s Day. Not only did he bring me roses and a card, but he brought presents for his three other favorite girls. Our girls were so excited that Daddy brought them presents too. He really put smiles on all of our faces. :)

I LOVE See’s!! I signed up for the newsletter.

Valentine’s day is usually a flop around here. Since having kids matters have only gotten worse.

I think the best Valentine’s day was while we were in Indy, in Law School. Kurtis surprised my by sending flowers to my work and then he picked me up to go out to lunch. He was in a rush, so we hit burger king. Later that night he surprised me with a little purse from Victoria’s secret full of lotions and smelly shower gel. It was a nice surprise! It was not anything major, or super romantic, just a nice surprise when you least expect it!

I visited the See’s website and signed up for the newsletter.

I don’t tweet and my blog is private, so I guess that is it for me!

We don’t ‘do’ the stereo-typically holidays around here. I used to try but would get disappointed when hubs forgot to get whatever and when we moved to a place where sweetest day didn’t exist-it just firmed up his opinion of all the ‘hallmark’ holidays. Sometimes he buys me Dr.Peppers or dark chocolate Milky Ways, or the occasional whitman’s sampler the day after Valentine’s Day.

But this story isn’t about any of those times, its not even a story to make you say awww…..you will have to check out the blog to find out…..http://www.domesticextraordinaire.com/2010/02/sometimes-its-not-thought-that-counts.html

My husband and I aren’t very romantic BUT when we got engaged we were supposed to go to Philadelphia (he was going to propose in love park) but flights got delayed and we ended up not being able to go, well I ended up getting sick (like REALLY REALLY puke all day long I’d rather die than live like this sick) so he was sitting next to me on the couch while I think I am basically dying – he pulls the ring out of his pocket (where he’d been carrying it for two days!) while he’s holding my hand and slips it on my finger – the best part? I DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE – that’s how sick I was… he had to tell me to look. But when I did I got all teary and he got all mushy and told me how he’d been carrying it around in his pocket for two days waiting for the right time but just couldn’t wait any longer. He is embarrased that he didn’t do anything “cool” or “exciting” to ask but I am pretty darn happy with it.

I tweeted: http://twitter.com/mommabird2345/status/8504841421

My hubby and I started dating one month before V-Day in 06. After dating him for a month I knew he was a VERY traditional guy’s guy, not so romantic but knew he had to do something for V-day. I had just gotten out of a relationship with a guy who was so over the top I was a little used to the extravagance. Valentine’s Day hubby asked me to meet him at his apartment and we would go to dinner from there. I, of course, was late because I was so busy getting ready. When I showed up I found overcooked steak, wilted asparagus, a big heart box of candy, red roses that were wilting from the heat of the kitchen and a stuffed animal. And I melted. I had never had anyone go so traditional on me and I knew he had worked really hard to hit all the right notes. He asked me to marry him on our V-day dinner the next year.

We’re not really Valentine’s Day/romantic people, but the first year we spent in our new house, my husband ended up having the 14th off for some reason while I had to go to work. When I got home, he had the table all set (with a tablecloth, no less!), candles lit, and red roses in a vase. He had drawn me a hot bubble bath, and while I soaked, he cooked dinner (probably just spaghetti, but still). On top of all this, he had driven down to Costco that morning (a 1 1/2 hour drive, mind you) and bought me the most gorgeous pearl pendant necklace to match the pearl earrings he had given me as part of my wedding present.

Ahhh!

Mmmm…chocolate!

Valentine’s Day 1998 is when my husband realized he loved me: We had driven from NC down to Myrtle Beach for a nice weekend getaway. Upon arrival, there was a dozen roses in the hotel room along with a romantic card. We walked on the beach together (February is still cold in SC, yo!) and sat on a swinging bench and just held hands.
YEARS LATER, he admitted to me that that’s when he realized he was in love with me.
But to shatter this illusion of romantical-ness, I ended up drinking a bit too much that V-Day night, and was completely hung over for the drive home. I made him stop at a Dairy Queen so I could vomit in their restroom. And he listened to the Daytona 500 on the car radio while I moaned the entire 3 hour drive.

It was Wes’ and my second married Valentine’s day and we were BROKE. Like, super-hero broke.

I told him we had a $10 budget for the evening, and he proceeded to somehow finagle a small box of chocolates, a small bottle of Martinelli’s, and a romantic dinner of tortellini out of that $10.

I came home to find the flowers clumsily arranged in one of our vases, dinner ready and hot and delicious, and two champagne flutes filled with apple cider.

It was our most frugal Valentine’s day, but it was also the one that made me SQUEE the loudest :)

BTW, I Twittered about the giveaway here: http://twitter.com/ParsingNonsense/status/8508430751

We don’t really do anything for Valentine’s Day. We really don’t do much of anything the way it’s “supposed” to be done. We lived together before we ever went on a date, and slept together before that. My husband was still married (separated) when we got together, and we put a down payment and started building a house before we got engaged.

I did, however, insist that my husband ask me to marry him. I might have been the driving force behind most of the major moves in our relationship, but I wasn’t going to do that one for him.

And he did. He was waiting inside the door of our apartment on bended knee. While I struggled with the keys, my backpack, and tried not to drop the pizza rolls (his favorite!) I had brought home for dinner.

I said yes :)

I signed up for the newsletter and tweeted, too!

While I’m now happily married to the man of my dreams (who insisted we “make up” a Valentines Day we’d been traveling on & then proposed) I had a Valentines Day in college that was epic. My boyfriend at the time bought me a polyester dress that was two 2 sized too small that was blue, to “match my eyes.” I have green eyes. He then took me to a chain Mexican restaurant that was 30 minutes into the suburbs (we both lived in New Orleans) and told me he’d prefer if I only ordered water & off the kids menu to “cut down on the cost.”

Yes. True story.

I actually have two love stories to share because both are very dear to me.
When I was a first year senior (I had two senior years) in college there was a very cute transfer student who was in two of my art classes. I was really attracted to him and one day mid semester I decided to take a chance because I thought he was a very good person. I started to leave him anonymous notes in his art locker. They were one or two lines taken from different songs that referred to smiles because I thought he had the greatest smile. I left two a week for about a month. A few of us in the art department decided to go see The Addams Family movie. We had made arrangements and I was supposed to pick this cute guy up and go to the movies. At the last minute everyone in our group canceled so it was just the two of us. Since it was right before winter break I took a chance knowing that if he didn’t reciprocate my feelings I’d have two weeks at home to ride out my embarrassment. I made a tape (yes, tape) with all the songs that I took the lines from. After the movie I dropped him back off and when he got out of the car I rolled down the window and told him he forgot something and threw the cassette tape at him and took off. The next time I saw him in class he said “So it was you.” And so it began.

Four years later we got married.

The Huz is not very romantic, but he’s pretty clever when he tries. I appreciate flowers but can think of better ways to spend money. I am a working artist and use many different materials. One day he came home from work and had one hand behind his back and said “I got something for you.” I told him he shouldn’t have wasted his money on flowers and he brought his hand forward and had a dozen glue sticks! It was awesome, just perfect.

My birthday is the day before Valentine’s Day, so we’re usually celebrated out by the time V-day rolls around. One year, I had been working really hard to lose some weight after the holiday binge season. We were out shopping one day and my husband pointed out this gorgeous fitted red dress. I just kind of huffed at it and kept walking. He made me turn around and look at it. He asked, “Do you like this?” I said, “Of course, it’s gorgeous, but I need to shed 5 more pounds before I’d even try it on.” And then I forgot about it. On my birthday, I opened a package containing a medium-sized heart-shaped box. When I openened the box, there, all rolled up, was the red dress. I had shed those extra 5 pounds and it fit perfectly.

For the record, I would give all my toes to be able to fit into that dress again!(That was waaaaaay before my son was born!)

For our first married Christmas my husband bought me underwear and sports bras – and not the sexy little underwear, but like the granny panties, comfy, economical kind…all because he knew I needed them. I guess it is the thought that counts?!?
I can confidently report he has improved, this year for Christmas he got be beautiful jewelry and a gorgeous scarf from a local boutique! :)

When I couldn’t deal with any wedding preparations for our (very spontaneous) wedding anymore, my almost-husband spent two days visiting rooms all over Manhattan to find the perfect one with the perfect view for our 24h honeymoon. He did, and then we had the loveliest honeymoon ever.

My husband has done some amazingly romantic things for me. If you met him, you’d probably not even know he had it in him. He was the first to say “I love you” in an amazing letter he wrote to me when we were in college (we were long-distance for four agonizing years). And five years to the day from when I received that letter in my mailbox, he made some lame excuse that law school (he was a first year) had been cancelled. It wasn’t all champagne & roses. It was a sweet night out in my convertible, a little dinner, and an X-Files episode (Hey, it was 1994, what do you expect?!). It was pretty much a perfect evening just being together, with a proposal at the end of the night on the playground at his apartment featuring the most perfect emerald cut diamond that has never lost its sparkle even after fifteen years. I don’t mind sounding gushy, corny, or cliche. He’s amazing and he’s all mine.

I don’t have a true love story or anything but I do have a story about my mom that I think is sweet. She went out of town and since I didn’t have a significant other to give me something ,she left me a card and chocolate. It was a surprise and very cute.

My hubby scoffs at V-day but he makes up for it by doing romantic things the rest of the year so I let it slide (I was never big on Vday either). The sweetest thing – or at least the first really sweet thing? We were dating. We had only been dating a couple of months. We were in a store browsing. I picked up a leather jacket and tried it on. He told me it looked great and I should buy it. I simply said I didn’t need it and put it back w/o mentioning that I was a poor social worker and couldn’t afford to randomly pick up a new jacket. A few weeks later, it was cold and we were going out. He was helping me into my coat – it was the jacket. He not only remember the exact jacket – but the size was correct. It was the sweetest thing because he noticed, really noticed, what I was looking at. We looked at a lot of things but he zeroed in on one thing and went back later and picked it up for me. It wasn’t the coat – it was the thought. I don’t think I ever had a man truly pay attention before.

Last year was our first Valentine’s Day together and we were still living in different cities. When I arrived at his place it was like stepping into a cooking show, the counters were hardly visible beneath the all of the scattered ingredients, the stove top burners were all going and he had flour on his face. He’d made a chicken lasagna, ala Mama Carolla’s from our first date. I ended up helping him finish the assembly. The thing probably weighed about 20 lbs when it finally went in the oven, but it was absolutely delicious! For dessert he’d bought a cheesecake and cut out two heart shaped pieces and topped them with strawberries. We’re newly married now (he proposed a few weeks after that V-day!) and I do most of the cooking. He does the dishes. :)

My husband always manages to do something super sweet for V-Day. The first year was the best though. He was getting ready to move to CO where I would be joining him a long 3 months later. I asked him to wait until the day after V-day. The day of he gave me a stuffed monkey to remind me of him while he was gone. He left the next day. I cried and cried, holding on to my monkey. 8 years later I still sleep with my monkey. And my husband.

he was a waiter at a restaurant i did.not.like. for some odd reason, i had a hankering for this particular place.

during our dinner, he would not leave our table. it got to the point where we wanted to complain.

somehow, to be funny my friend took his myspace address and from there we’d leave him funny comments to embarass him (he’s younger than me so this was more particularly humorous.)

he wanted to hang out and i actually agreed. i chose the restaurant but decided (after we’d ordered) that he probably couldn’t afford it so i paid. the rest is history. i never considered that first meet-up a date but he does and LOVES to tell everyone i took him out and paid. ridiculous, lol.

My sweetest love story?

My husband told me that his feelings about me started “changing” when my nephew was born. He was nine weeks early, and I took photos printed on regular paper to the dog park. Ed saw the photos. Changing feelings. We started dating six months later. We were married 10 months after that. Awww…

I was a Freshman in college. My now husband (Matt) was living in Italy (where he is from). It was my 18th birthday. I came home from my classes to find a rose, with a handwritten note, from Matt on my bed. I found out from him later that THREE MONTHS BEFORE he visited my dorm, delivered the note to the hall adviser, then had a friend on my birthday buy and drop the flower to the hall adviser who put it on my bed for me. If I wasn’t sure before then that I loved this guy, that helped convince me.

thus far, my sweetest love story is not the guy who nearly forced me into my first kiss by threatening to not get me home in time for curfew. or the **significantly** older guy who used me for other things, willing though i was, I was too young to realize what was going on. It was probably the guy who bought me a dozen miniature multi-colored roses on sweetest day because he was sweet and he liked me. The guy who walked me to my door and gave me what I, to this day, consider to be my *true* first kiss with me standing on the cement step and him on the ground and giving me a friend hug and pulling back into that Hollywood Theatrically perfect close-ness and kissing the most perfect kiss ever. Ever. Still gives me butterflies. That is my sweetest love story, for now. I’m signing up for Match this weekend, so hopefully I can top that soon!

My husband and I met in an online game (star wars) and immediately hit it off. Within days, we “married” our game characters together, and then spent all our time ignoring our friends and chatting in the house we built ourselves.

We met on September 11. We “married” in game (it’s just a silly fun thing, but significant in retrospect) on September 14.
The following May, I moved here to Texas. We’d already been discussing marriage, but wanted to date in person rather than long-distance with weekend visits, just to be sure.
By fall, we were sure, but I was leaving it up to him to surprise me. We were pretty broke since I hadn’t been able to find a steady job and he was covering the expenses I couldn’t make. Ever since I was little, I’d always said I’d rather be engaged and wear a plastic ring from a 25-cent dispense, with evening gowns if necessary, than wait until my man could afford a rock. In the meantime, I had a teeny diamond ring I had purchased myself long before, which I wore on my left ring finger as a statement of being “taken.” (Because I was totally beating off the suitors with a baseball bat, right? yeah, right.) ANYHOW.
On September 14th, at dusk, before we went to pick up his kids, he took me to a little park. He asked to see my ring, then put it in his shirt pocket. He asked if I would be willing to not wear it anymore, and I begged him to let me continue wearing it until I had one from him to replace it. He sighed, and handed back — a different ring — and proposed. Of course I said yes.

It was dark by this point, and the new ring was so light on my hand, I knew it was the plastic ring I’d been begging him to get on the ball and propose with. As we got into the car to get the kids, I marveled at how he found one that didn’t have a huge plastic gem in it, but a tiny clear gem! I asked him how he found such a classy plastic ring, and he flipped on the overhead light in the car, telling me to look again. I looked at the ring and nearly fell over when I realized it was a real diamond ring, in a style I love!
To this day, he won’t tell me how he afforded it or where he got it, but it really doesn’t matter.

We wanted to get married on one of our “anniversaries” but waiting until the following September seemed too far away, so we looked at Valentine’s day – the 14th but still a significant love day. It fell in the middle of the week – aw man! But then we noticed that the 11th was a Saturday. And that’s when we were wed.

(Pix at the link on my name – same post that I’ve linked on this site previously, so Casey you’ve already seen them. But our anniversary is coming up so perhaps I’ll post new pictures then… hint hint)

My sweetest love story. . . . hmmm, I don’t think right now is a good time to try to think of that. I am going through a divorce, so I NEED this candy in more ways than one!

Before we were married, one Valentine’s Day my husband (then-boyfriend) made me a video card. It was hands down the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me. The short iMovie features photos of us doing all our favorite things together, and has an interlude in the middle where he videotaped me one day being silly on the beach and writing our initials, D+K, equaling a heart in the sand. We eventually wed and the symbol at our wedding was a D and a K together, and the equation has totally stuck since then.

I remember our first Valentines day and my now husband, then boyfriend got me a phone… worst of all is he had is wrapped really pretty. Big heavy box.. I am thinking what can this be? something amazing..

I could not hide my disappointment when I saw it was a cordless phone. Lets just say he made up for that and then some when he proposed to me a month later with my dream ring from Tiffanys.

It’s all Good

We just celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary by running the Rock n’ Roll Marathon in Phoenix. My husband waited for me at the finish line, so he was the first person I saw when I finished! Nothing says romance like a big sweaty kiss, right?

I was watching eating cheesecake and watching fireworks with my boyfriend when he whipped out a ring and asked me to marry him. My response? “I guess so.” In my defense, I was totally surprised and not thinking clearly.

My sweetest love story…I love telling people about my husband’s proposal. We used to love going hiking together, especially in the fall. That year, he hid a ring in his pocket the whole time. We’d been on the trail before, so he knew where he’d do it. There is a spot where two rocks lean together. He told me he’d go around ( a little way ahead on the trail) and pop out behind those rocks, so I could take a picture. He came out with a hand behind his back, then knelt down and proposed. So special! And I have the photo to always remember.

How’s this for sappy. I met my husband in April 1997, I was barely 18, and I knew the first time I met him that he was the one. One week later we were dating, a week after that we were engaged, not quite three weeks later we eloped. It’s been almost 13 years and we still call each other at least twice a day just because we can even if we don’t have anything more to say than, “I love you.”

I tried to dump my now-husband after we’d been dating about 2 months. It was August 1998, the summer before our second year of college: I’d spent an entire week dragging myself from my bed to the couch and vice versa, living on chicken broth and tea, due to a horrible throat infection. George phoned me every day (as he had since we started dating), but I’d lost my voice; when I was able to talk again the following week, I kept making excuses to avoid his calls. My mom noticed and asked me what was wrong.

“Nothing’s wrong—that’s exactly the problem!” I confessed. “I think I’m going to break up with him because… well, because he’s too perfect. I don’t think I’m ready for that.”

I drove straight from work the next day to George’s on-campus summer rental apartment and—smelling like bread/salami/onions in my oh-so-sexy Subway uniform!—I told him gently (and lamely) that I just wanted to be friends. “You’ve been wonderful,” I apologized, “but I can’t give you enough in return.” He took both of my hands in his, looked me straight in the eye, and said, “Whatever you are giving is enough. I have never felt so loved in all my life.”

So I stayed.

Twelve years later, after surviving almost 8 years of marriage, four years of law school (during which he also worked full time), two miscarriages, and two children, I know exactly what he meant. And I’m really glad I stuck around to find out.

Sweetest love story? Flying overseas with his family to surprise him on his 21st birthday. He knew they were coming, but not me. That was 13 years ago and it’s still the best surprise I ever pulled off.
